Affiliate Marketing and the Serious Misconception
It is my opinion that the general public has a serious misconception of affiliate marketing. They either think it is a joke (a scam) or they think that you go online, sign up for some affiliate products and you are going to make a ton of money quickly. Nothing can be further from the truth for both of these examples.
Yes, it is true that there are a ton of programs for making money online that state “Make $100,000 in 48 hours” or whatever else pie in the sky promise they throw your way. But come on, do you really think you can just jump into a program and make that kind of money in 48 hours? It’s statements like this that has given people the wrong impression about affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is the real deal, it is not a joke, but you also are not going to make a ton of money quickly. You have to take the time and learn affiliate marketing the proper way. It is a very time consuming business when you are first starting out. There is so much to learn and you want to learn as much as you can. You want to have a checklist of all of the things that you have to learn and a checklist for all of the assignments you have to do.
If you are serious about learning affiliate marketing the first thing you should do is some research on the best affiliate programs. Also check out some affiliate forums and find out what everyone is talking about when it comes to affiliate marketing. Affiliate forums can be a mountain of information for you.
Once you understand a little about affiliate marketing and you are still serious about learning as much as you can, then you have to start working on your mindset. You have to realize that this is going to be your business and it is going to be a lot of work. Also, if you have a spouse or a significant other, you have to make them understand that this is something that you truly believe is your future. But you also have to make them understand that it is not something that happens overnight. I cannot stress this enough. Having the support of your loved one is very important. You don’t want them breathing down you neck asking when you are going to make your first dollar, or having them think that you are wasting your time. You may even want to try to get them involved in what you are doing, but that is something only you would know.
Learning affiliate marketing is just like taking college classes. You should have your lessons that you have to learn and study, and then you should have your homework that you have to do before moving on. It will be very confusing when you first start learning everything, just like when you first start taking some classes in school. There may be days when you are totally lost in what you just learned and then there comes the day when the light bulb goes on and you say “wow, I get it now”. That is a great feeling.
These first few steps are just to get you started in affiliate marketing, and to help you realize that this is your business, treat it that way.
