The internet marketing world is full of sites and articles offering to inform you of all the list building strategies that you will ever need to know, but the majority of these so called “secrets” are totally useless, many relate to out dated lines of business only and the remaining few, if you are lucky may be of some use to you. Here I have some basic list building tips that you can implement to get started – modify and adjust these to suit your own strategies as every online business is different in some way.

Begin by forgetting everything you have ever been told about the importance of building massive lists – there is absolutely nothing to be gained by building a list of 10,000 emails if 9,995 of them would never dream of buying from you. A list of couple of hundred hungry customers is much more value than an uninterested list of thousands of people and for this single reason its usually not worthwhile wasting your hard earned cash buying lists – they are not targeted or focus on your niche and you don’t know how valid the email addresses are in any case.

To start up your list create a squeeze page that offers a good value, free download related to your niche to encourage those who will leave their email addresses – people who do this are people who have a genuine interest in the products you are promoting. Once you have built a small list, ensure that the content you send them is of the highest quality and is sent on a regular bases (this is the only way to retain their interest) – you need to continue reminding those that have signed to your list that you exist and the material you provide to them will prove your commitment and genuine belief in the products that you will offering them.

Once your list starts trusting you, you can ask them for references and while only a few may reply, those who do will be giving you contact details of those who are like them and will be interested in what you have to offer and the fact that you are communicating with the new customer through a reference means that trust has already been established with your new contact.

Also, do not Believe that when you have email addresses you can stop there – ask people whom you are mailing regularly for more information about themselves to refine your marketing efforts; but be discrete and do not appear to be intrusive. You can do this by conducting surveys and opinion polls – but be careful never to seem to be personal or inquisitive as this will be off putting and lead to people unsubscribing.

Always check out what the competition are doing by joining their mailing lists under a different email address – it’s a great way to learn their list building secrets. Above all the most important of list building secrets of all is that it is not the size of your list that is important, it is how you use it to build a long term business that matters.
